Mukono is a district in Central Uganda and it's main town is one of the fastest growing urban areas in Uganda.
Many children in the Mukono area drop out of school to work in stone quarries or sugar cane plantations due to parents and guardians being unable to pay for schooling, uniform, meals and school equipment.
Without good education their prospects are bleak; road side sellers who flock alongside taxis which pull in to sell drinks and kebabs make less than £2/day.
Mbalala Model Pre and Primary School is one of the newest projects in Uganda with 70 students aged 5-14 years. It is working hard to promote education in the area and support parents who choose to send their children to school instead of sending them to work.
Mukono Children's Home provides education and a home for 500+ children who are orhaned or don't have immeditae family to look after them due to Malaria, AIDs, or abuse. However, the home works hard to establish links between the children and their existing family
members even when circumstances prevent them from living together.
