All of Patchwork Kids’ work in Macedonia supports children in the Little Friends Preschool and school programme in Shutka.
Shutka is the largest settled Gypsy community of any city in the world (approx. 70,000 people). Although part of Skopje, Shutka is a unique and separate community. It is a very needy area, housing is poor and even basic amenities are very often lacking.
Typically, boys and girls in Shutka complete only the 8th grade in school. Very few attend post-primary or secondary schools. Significant numbers of children do not attend primary school regularly; some do not attend at all. Many are encouraged to beg on the streets to earn money for their families rather than go to school.
The aim of Little Friends is to provide a service into a very needy community. To give the children who attend the Pre-School better educational opportunities and to provide support for the children and their families to help them to continue with their schooling.
